Busted because of pollution. In the Himalaya the warmer weather has resulted in the ‘melt down’ of several glaciers. One example is Lake Thorthormi that used to be Thorthormi Glacier. The problem is that lakes created this way is surrounded by a vulnerable rim of soil, and sooner or later the rim will bust. So far these busted rims around glacier lakes has only caused local casualties, but it is feared that a major disaster could happen. NASA has constant surveillance by means of satellite cameras on these areas http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=40962

Instead of finding a solution to the World’s two main problems, ‘Climate Changes and Poverty’, they dropped a clanger in Rome.
In July 2009 the United Nations invited the wives of the G8-leaders to a happening in Rome, Italy. – The Presidents, prime ministers and other statesmen of G8, the world richest countries, were negotiating about the financial crisis, development aid to poor countries, and the impact of the pollution on the world’s climate. – However, at the same time their wives were invited to a happening by UN’s WFP, World Food Program.
The happening was that the wives of the statesmen should feed porridge to children from Ghana. (The children flew from Ghana to Rome as puppets to the entertainment of the presidential wives)
When I first heard about this, I didn’t believe it was true. But, it is!
The information of this happening was not in the news in July when the event took place. The reason that it is being published now because of a protest in SIDA’s internal magazine (SIDA is the official Swedish organization for aid to people in poor countries).
Well, that money is being wasted this way is one issue, but I find it scandalous that the children was exhibited this way. If the idea was to inform the wives of the world leaders about the living conditions for children in Africa, then the arrangement should have been ‘the other way around’. The wives should have been flown to Ghana, where they would have to eat porridge.
The happening in Rome illustrates how little the politicians and their own families are willing to engage personal in the two main problems the world is facing, ‘The Poverty Problem’ and ‘The Climate Problem’.
Not only should the UN’s money for the World Food Program be spend wiser, but each activity the politicians participate in should be evaluated and calculated regarding the carbon footprint!
Calculations of the carbon dioxide emission of each political arrangement would most certainly be a benefit for the climate, and reduce the dangers of the global warming.
Make comments about this incident. And write about other incidents, where it is obvious that your politicians say one thing about ‘What to do’ but act differently. So, Bust them!

It is easy to see the pollution of the environment if it is garbage and litter that is floating around on the ground. It is more difficult to spot the pollution of the water and the air. Well, it is of course easy, if the air is full of visible black smoke from a factory chimney, or if the smell from a chemical factory can be sensed miles away; or the river and lake is floating with dead fish. But the real threat are the less visible dangers of the changing balance of air and water.

Greenhouse gasses and CO2 emission is not immediate visible, but maybe this invisible pollution is even more dangerous than the visible garbage and chemical waste. A similar hidden pollution of water takes place when polluted water find its way to the groundwater; the nature can only handle the rinsing of water to a certain point, and some chemicals are not filtered by the nature but end up in the drinking water.

The oceans cover two thirds of the Planet Earth’s surface, but in the worst scenario the sea level will rise considerable, changing large land areas to water.

But even worse than inhaling polluted air and drinking unhealthy water, is the effect that the greenhouse gasses and the CO2 emission has on the oceans. The oceans cover two thirds of the Planet Earth’s surface, but in the worst scenario the sea level will rise considerable, changing large land areas to water. The country Maldives in the Indian Ocean will most likely cease to exist because of the very low altitude of the isles. The rising water level of the oceans might not in itself be pollution, but is rather a result caused by pollution.

Sceptic, who denies the consequences of climate change caused by the global warming, will claim that this isn’t true (they might even claim that the whole discussion about the environmental problems is another example of a global conspiracy theory). Well, they are very welcome to participate on this blog; and hopefully we will get a sober debate on climatic issues.

Before the debate is being opened for any viewpoint (pro or contra) let me then remind about the ongoing melting of the mountain glaciers and the ice caps of as well the North Pole, Greenland, and Antarctic. The polar bears and the penguins cannot speak for themselves; so whoever that wants to be a polar bear or penguin ambassador is very welcome too.
